LEVEL is an international monthly video game magazine founded on January 24, 1995 in Prague, Czech Republic by Jan Tománek and Martin Ludvík, and expanded across Europe through Vogel Publishing and Burda. Launching flagship editions in Turkey (March 1997) and Romania (September 1997), it defined pre-broadband PC culture via cover-mounted CD-ROMs and DVDs, hardware testing labs, and enduring local editorial voices.

LEVEL Magazine (International Gaming Press)

1995 Prague Origins, Vogel Expansion, and the Cover-Disc Revolution

Launched in Prague on January 24, 1995 by Jan Tománek and Martin Ludvík amid Czechia's vibrant post-Velvet Revolution press alongside Excalibur and Score, LEVEL rapidly scaled into a transnational European brand under German publishing group Vogel Publishing (later Vogel Burda). Across emerging PC markets where dial-up tariffs made large downloads prohibitive, LEVEL revolutionized software access by bundling custom-authored cover CD-ROMs—and later dual-layer DVDs—packed with playable demos, full commercial games, official patches, DirectX drivers, mods, and benchmark utilities alongside rigorous hardware laboratory reviews.

LEVEL Türkiye, LEVEL Romania, and Multi-Decade Regional Legacy

International expansion flourished in 1997 with two landmark sister editions. Launched in Istanbul in March 1997, LEVEL Türkiye became Turkey's longest-running monthly print gaming periodical—surpassing 300 issues across more than a quarter-century—shaped by celebrated writers and editors including Göktuğ Yüksel, Sinan Akkol, Tuğbek Ölek, and Ceyda Doğan Karaş while nurturing LAN tournaments and domestic developers. Six months later in September 1997, LEVEL Romania debuted in Bucharest, anchoring Romanian PC criticism for sixteen years before its editors carried the torch forward as independent successor NIVELUL2, cementing LEVEL's stature across Prague, Istanbul, and Bucharest.
